Re-entering the same area because an operation performed due to a disease or problem does not work or causes other problems, and corrective secondary surgeries performed to resolve complaints or to solve problems in that area are called.

Conditions requiring revision surgery in patients undergoing obesity surgery:

While very successful results are obtained in obesity treatment and weight loss with bariatric surgery, in some cases the targeted results may not be achieved. As in all surgical operations, there may be some complications in bariatric, that is, obesity surgery, and the desired weight loss cannot be achieved or regained weight. In some cases, bariatric surgery may need to be revised. These situations are:

  1. Regain weight gain
  2. Development of complaints such as treatment-resistant reflux
  3. Development of strictures and twists that do not allow the passage of edible foods

Revision surgeries constitute approximately 10% of obesity surgeries all over the world. Even if it is low, there is a possibility of gaining weight again after obesity surgeries. The reasons for regaining weight in some patients after obesity surgery should be investigated very well.

Reasons for regaining weight after bariatric surgery:

  1. As patient compliance is not good, they may gain weight. Patients may have an eating disorder. They may be drinking alcohol.
  2. The appropriate surgical method may not have been chosen for the patient.
  3. They may not have been made with the proper technique.

With the surgical intervention to be performed in patients other than the first option, weight gain can be prevented and weight loss can be achieved again. First-class patients may need psychotherapy and psychiatric support.

The method to be applied in each patient who will undergo revision surgery is different. All of these procedures can be performed laparoscopically (closed) method.
